Israel Helps Ukraine Clean Up Nazis

Representatives of Ukraine's neo-Nazi Azov Battalion are touring Israel to raise support for the unit's imprisoned fighters. They met Israeli politicians and soldiers.

Azov intelligence officer Illia Samoilenko was released in September in a prisoner swap with Russia.

He was one of hundreds of Azov fighters who surrendered in May at the end of a long Russian siege of the eastern city of Mariupol.

"Israel values ​​freedom, it values ​​strength, Israel values ​​honor. The same things we value," he told the Israeli newspaper Haaretz this week.

Samoylenko also told The Times of Israel that he "sees Israel and Ukraine on the same side, the civilized fighting the uncivilized in the struggle for the future of humanity," the newspaper concluded.

"We have prosperity, a beautiful, prosperous, beautiful civilization, and they have medieval ancestors," he said. The "they" in this case seem to be the Palestinians and the Russians, whom Samoilenko considers "uncivilized."

Before Russia invaded Ukraine in February, it was widely acknowledged that the Azov Battalion espoused Nazi ideology.

For example, the Anti-Defamation League, a major Jewish community and Israel lobby group, warned in 2019 that Azov was a "Ukrainian extremist group" with "connections to neo-Nazis and white supremacists".

But now that Western governments are arming Ukraine, including the Azov Battalion, in a proxy war against Russia, they are making a concerted effort to hide this ugly reality from the public.

Consequently, with the help of the media and now Israel and its lobby, Azov has been trying to rebrand itself in recent months.

In May, The Times of London reported that Azov planned to change its logo from the wolf angel - a far-right symbol associated with a German army division during Hitler's Nazi regime.

But even this surface whitening seems to have proved too much of a change for Azov to bear. The symbol is still visible on all Azov online interfaces.

Azov's recent social media posts show that his warriors are still using the wolf angel.

And photos posted by a pro-Azov Twitter account, the Association of Families of the Defenders of Azov, show Samoylenko and Fedosyuk visiting Mashad, where Samoylenko wore the Nazi-affiliated symbol on his uniform.

Masada is the site of the mythical last resistance of the Jewish warriors against the Roman forces. Today, Israel holds the swearing-in of new soldiers there, and they vow that "Mashada will not fall again."

The Telegram account of the Azovstal association posted photos of Azov members at Masada and said: "When we talk today in Israel about the defense of Mariupol, the Israelis ... constantly repeat: 'Mariupol is your Masada'".

In addition to Mashada, the tweets show that the two Ukrainian fighters also met with reserve Israeli soldiers, attended a film screening and met with Naama Lazimi - one of the leading Israeli politicians of the Labor Party participating in the outgoing government coalition.

Shortly after the publication of the article, Azovstal's Twitter account deleted their post about the meeting with Lazimi. You can see the screenshot below. Shahar Tenenbaum, a spokesperson for Lazmi, also contacted The Electronic Intifada and asked that his name be removed from the article.


Documented links to Nazism

During the meeting with Lazimi, Samoilenko "exposed the myths created by Russian propaganda about the Azov regiment," the Azovstal association claimed on its Telegram channel.

This appears to be a reference to the Russian government's accurate claim since the start of its invasion of Ukraine in February that the Azov Battalion is a Nazi organization.

But let's recall that this was not only Russia's claim, but also widely acknowledged and reported by the Western media, including the EU-funded "investigative" website Bellingcat.

In 2019, Bellingcat detailed the battalion's international contacts with white supremacist groups, noting that "Azov's interest in reaching American extremists and the Ukrainian group's comfort in working with neo-Nazis in the US and the West at least until 2018 - four years after the Azov battalion was integrated into the Ukrainian National Guard - it was visible".

But as the US, UK and EU wage their proxy war against Russia in Ukraine, Western media have largely fallen in line, sympathetically portraying Azov as "defenders of Mariupol", misunderstood nationalists and victims of "Putin's propaganda".

Even the Anti-Defamation League, which previously condemned Azov's Nazi affiliation, is now taking its turn.

After the Russian invasion, the ADL engaged in open Holocaust revisionism to embellish Hitler's wartime collaborators, who are now revered as national heroes in Ukraine, even though they helped the German leader kill hundreds of thousands of Poles and Jews during World War II.

ADL is still helping with air freshening in Azov. Recently, the Israeli lobby group claimed that the 2014 integration of the Azov Battalion into the Ukrainian National Guard meant that the Azov military unit had broken away from the broader far-right Azov political movement and the movement's founder, Andriy Biletsky.

As a result, the ADL now says it "does not view the Azov Regiment as the far-right group it once was."

But in 2019, Bellingcat already reported on "a newly discovered statement from a senior Ukrainian law enforcement official" that "suggests that the incorporation of the Azov Regiment into the Ukrainian National Guard did not affect the far-right ideology espoused by its former members - instead, it enabled the Azov for him to obtain sophisticated weapons and build his own political party".

"Restore the honor of the white race"

In recent months, the Azov Battalion appears to have renamed itself the "Azov Regiment", another apparent attempt to legitimize itself as a normal element of the Ukrainian state and whitewash its Nazi image while maintains all its policies.

This name change was played up this week in a puff piece in The Jerusalem Post, which claimed that "the Azov Battalion is the predecessor of [the] Azov Regiment."

But just as the US and its allies have repeatedly tried to rebrand al-Qaeda's Syrian branch as "moderate rebels", such cosmetic changes are unlikely to fool anyone outside the ranks of spineless mainstream media journalists.

And despite Samoilenko and Fedosiuk charming the Israeli press this week, there is absolutely no reason to believe that Azov has strayed from its racist, anti-Semitic roots.

In addition to still using the Nazi wolf angel symbol, Azov's recent social media posts show that the group's founder, Andriy Biletsky, is still a regular presence at Azov parades.

Biletsky "vowed to restore the honor of the white race" and when he was in parliament he introduced laws banning "miscegenation".

In 2014, he wrote that "the historic mission of our nation at this critical moment is to lead the white races of the world in a final crusade for their survival. A crusade against untermenschen led by the Semites."

A committed fascist

Despite the fact that this year the same Western media that appreciated and treated the Azov Nazis sympathetically, Yulia Fedosyuk is also an active member of the Ukrainian far-right.

"One of my best friends is Jewish and is in Azov," Fedosiuk claimed in an interview with the Times of Israel this week.

Samoyenko made similar claims in an interview with Haaretz, a claim the paper noted it "couldn't immediately back up with names."

In his revealing article about Fedosiuk, researcher Bob Pitt notes that "Azov's penchant for double-talk and denial is especially evident in relation to anti-Semitism, where assurances given to Western journalists that the movement welcomes Jewish members are contradicted elsewhere by extreme hostility towards Jews manifestations"

Pitt writes that Fedosiuk is a committed fascist who speaks out against feminism and LGBTQ rights, and who admired early 20th-century Romanian fascist leader Corneliu Codreanu.

Codreanu was a virulent anti-Semite who once declared that "The historical mission of our generation is to solve the Jewish problem" ("Jew" being an extremely derogatory term used for Jews).

Nazis in power

The Azov Battalion began as a gang of far-right street criminals. Its activists formed the outpost of the 2014 US-backed "Majdan" coup that overthrew Ukraine's elected government. Not long after, he was integrated into the Ukrainian armed forces, where he is still working.

In 2018, Israeli human rights lawyer Eitay Mack wrote a letter to the Israeli government, protesting that the country's aid to Ukraine was being used by neo-Nazis.

In its response, the government confirmed that the arms licenses granted to Ukraine were issued "in full consultation with the State Department and other government agencies," but did not deny arming Ukrainian Nazis.

Electronic Intifada's 2018 expose of the arming of Ukrainian Nazis in Israel caused a minor diplomatic incident when Ukraine's ambassador to Israel wrote a formal complaint to Haaretz after the paper echoed our coverage.
